Race & Hollywood: Asian Images in Film (Turner Classic Movies)

During the month of June — on Tuesday and Thursdays all month! — 37 films examining the portrayal of Asians in classic movies will be featured on TCM in a festival series, Race & Hollywood: Asian Images in Film. The festival is co-hosted by Robert Osborne (TCM’s primetime host) and Dr. Peter X Feng, an associate professor of film, ethnic and cultural studies at the University of Delaware and expert on Asian American film.

For a full schedule, video clips, photo gallery, articles and more; go to:

There’s an interview with Dr. Peter X. Feng on the Hyphen Blog -

Finding Japanese films in Ohio State’s collections

In the past few years I have been purchasing many Japanese films for the library collections. Here are some hints on finding them:

Search OSCAR — http://library.ohio-state.edu/search/X — for:

1) Keyword searches –

  • Keyword=videorecording
with a limit for Language = Japanese
(This search finds 253 titles on August 17, 2005)
  • Keyword= dvd
    with a limit for Language=Japanese
(This search finds 89 titles on August 17, 2005)
  • Keyword=vhs
    with a limit for Language=Japanese
(This search finds 149 titles on August 17, 2005)

Note: To find other kinds of media in the Japanese collections, the same technique can be used with keywords such as “sound recording” or “cd-rom.”

2) Series searches —

I have been purchasing films/TV shows in the following series (which can be searched as a TITLE) –

Some series can be searched as KEYWORDs using “and videorecording” (when we also have books based on the series), for example:

3) Other searches –

Note: Films can also be searched by title, director’s name (author), actor’s names, film company name, etc. For example:
