Contributions to East Asian Information Literacy Project

My role has been focused on training everyone, but I made a few pages since the last report (9/28/2007). One brought together links about Japanese American internment camps to help with programming for the 2008 Day of Remembrance commemorating Toyo Suyemoto and featuring readings by Lawson Inada. Also, I put some pages together for the Japanese 800 course on research and bibliography for Japanese studies, and edited a few existing pages related to that course. Links to some of the pages are listed here. There’s a lot more to be done!! Continue reading

Searching for Japanese books by subject

The Ohio State University Libraries uses the Library of Congress subject headings (LCSH) to support subject searches with controlled vocabulary — in addition to the convenient keyword search. Other research libraries also use LCSH, so the subject headings can also be used in Worldcat or to search in other research library catalogs. Spending some time becoming familiar with subject headings can be helpful in conducting research. An easy way to do this is to look at the “full record” when you find a book — then click on the subject headings to find other books on the same subject (or click on the call number to find books classified in the same call number range — another kind of subject index!)

Japanese library catalogs also use subject headings. At the National Diet Library(NDL)try the advanced search . There is a guide to NDL’s subject headings.

An older edition of NDL’s subject headings is available in print:
国立国会図書館件名標目表
Kokuritsu Kokkai Toshokan kenmei hyōmokuhyō
Z695 .K68 1991

A few years ago we kept subject bibliographies in the EAS Reference collection. For specific research purposes the printed books may still be helpful —

Nihon no Bijutsu — Translation of titles of each issue

Nihon no Bijutsu No. 487 Shukuin Busshi
Nihon no Bijutsu No. 487(Dec 2006) Shukuin Busshi

To improve access to the individual issues of Nihon no Bijutsu 日本の美術 (Arts of Japan) — a monthly journal published by Shibundo 至文堂 with many photographs of Japanese art objects — I started a list of the translated titles of each issue that was posted here in 2006. During Fall 2007 my graduate student assistant from the Department of Art History, Hyejeong Choi, took over the project.

As of January 2008 we are posting the new list on the Japanese studies Wiki —
