Libworld: library and library related blogs

There’s a fascinating series of postings about library blogs at the Infobib blog, including a review of Biblioblogs in Japan by Sho Sato and katz3 that includes links to a list of 51 Japanese biblioblogs. All I can say is “Wow!”

UBC Japanese collection blog

Today I was specifically looked for blogging by Japanese studies librarians. I quickly found Shirin Eshghi’s blog at UBC:

Japanese Language Librarian Blog
Information on the Japanese language collection and services at UBC’s Asian Library.

What a great blog! I immediately subscribed to the RSS feed in my Google Reader account. Here’s what caught my eye:

  • Monthly listings of selected new books, with a few appealing photos of the books themselves, sometime opened up to interesting pages. The titles (under broad subject categories) I noticed were the kinds of things that people from a wide range of disciplines would find interesting.
  • Information about Japanese databases, including tips. For example, Factiva, a general database that includes full text of Japanese newspaper and magazine articles from about 150 Japanese publications, is introduced. I’ve been using Factiva myself to search business news (new publications of Japanese company histories, etc), and have begun promoting it. I like the way Shirin introduces it on her blog.
  • There’s a notice about Japanese publishing trends in 2007 — just links to a list of bestsellers and a summary of trends at asahi.com. This kind of timely update is great, though.
  • Bravely Shirin links to her online calendar — looks like she will be coming to the AAS/CEAL meetings, so I will be able to talk with her about blogging there!
  • There’s a feed from the blog at the bottom of the Japanese Studies Resources web page, which looks very nice. I like that page very much — my old home page was similar. Perhaps I should go back to a simpler presentation of resources. It provides links to more specific resources under subject headings.

Well, those are just my first impressions. There is a lot of “food for thought” for me to consider further here with regard to blogging and presentation of Japanese library resources on a library web site!!

Blogging at East Asian library collections

Getting ready for my upcoming presentation at the Council on East Asian Libraries on “Scholarly Communication and Patron Services,” I set out today to see who’s blogging at East Asian collections. The first one I found is at Stanford:
East Asia Library Blog (Stanford) http://www.stanford.edu/group/asrg/cgi-bin/EALibraryblog/?p=79
It looks like it started in November 2006. The blog’s headline includes the Chinese translation of its title: 东亚图书馆博客. The latest post is about their subscription to Nikkoku Online, a database that is still on order here at Ohio State (being reviewed by OSU’s Legal department). Stanford also runs a feed of the five most recent posts to their web page, The East Asia Library: http://library.stanford.edu/depts/asrg/
The reason that the Stanford blog came up first in my search is that there it has information about meetings related to the recent controversy about closing Meyer Library — and those posts are widely linked. Too bad that we need controversies about our collections to spread awareness of our blogs!

Next I found a blog at Rutgers: Rutgers East Asian Librarian’s Blog: Connecting people with information and cultures http://tyang.wordpress.com/category/services/
It was started in October 2007 just after Tao Yang assumed the postion of East Asian Librarian and so far has two posts —
New article delivery service
Web resources
There are tabs for English Online Journals and Handouts from presentations. Looks great!

I found another blog — Chinese Canadian Library Weblog 加华图书馆博客 http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/jingliu/
It has some good information about meetings and discussion of issues related to East Asian library services. In contrast to the other two that I found earlier, that are both “institutional blogs,” this one is more typical of the “blogosphere” — jottings, notes, etc — from librarians who are thinking about very interesting aspects of Chinese studies librarianship! Postings at the site are by Jing and Lingbo.

Japanese journals at Upper Arlington Public Library

Two Japanese journals are available for circulation at UAPL!! I heard that they are subscribing to Shukan Asahi and Fujin Koron, although the titles are not listed in the UAPL catalog.
