In the spirit of the season of giving, we’ll be highlighting a few of the amazing gifts we received in 2019 throughout the rest of the year on our blog and/or Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Follow us on social media for more updates! As always, we are so thankful to our donors and friends throughout the world for supporting our collection.

Original art from Life With The Vampire, 1978. Written and drawn by Cara Sherman Tereno. Forms part of the Stephen R. Bissette Collection
We are always grateful to cartoonist and educator Stephen R. Bissette for his support of our mission as a donor and member of our National Advisory Council, but today we extend a special thanks to Bissette for his 2019 donation of work by the unsung cartoonist Cara Sherman Tereno.
An early student of the Joe Kubert School of cartooning and graphic art, Tereno was one of very few women working in mainstream comics in the 1980s. In addition to her work for DC Comics and Dark Horse, she created the Romulan Wine, a science fiction fanzine about Star Trek between 1971-1975.

Tereno created the fantastic queer vampire erotica comic Life With The Vampire* in 1978, later collected by Bissette and published in his horror anthology magazine Taboo in 1989. Tragically, her career was cut short when she passed away at the age of 44 from Leukemia. We are extremely grateful to Bissette for donating the original art and text overlays for three complete stories from Life With The Vampire (*alternately titled Life With A Vampire) to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, adding to our growing collection of work by women cartoonists.
