Cartoon Crossroads Columbus 2018 next week at the Billy Ireland!

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum is proud to host the first two days of the fourth-annual Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC)! This city-wide, four-day festival brings hundreds of cartoonists from across the nation together to celebrate cartoon art at a variety of venues throughout Columbus.

All events are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

On Thursday, catch presentations by NOAH VAN SCIVER on coloring, EMI GENNIS on hand lettering, as well as a spotlight on MICHAEL DEFORGE.

Friday’s features include presentations by CHARLES VESS on fantasy illustration, and a special panel celebrating KOYAMA PRESS featuring ANNIE KOYAMA, DUSTIN HARBIN, KEILER ROBERTS, and JESSICA CAMPBELL!

This year, we’re excited to add a new feature to our participation in CXC: on Friday, September 28th from 11am – 2pm, we will host a book sale of duplicate items from our collection in the lobby! We are accepting both cash and credit.

Also on campus Thursday and Friday are SOL-CON: The Brown + Black Comix Expo, and events at Wexner Center for the Arts, including film screenings and presentations by JIM WOODRING and LYNN JOHNSTON (These two events are free but require tickets which can be reserved in advance). On Thursday and Sunday, be sure to check out the CXC Scholarly Symposium – this year’s theme is “In the Gutter: The Public Work of Comics”!

On Friday from 5 – 7pm, join us for a special reception and award ceremony at the Billy Ireland!

Visitors will get to peruse an open-house display of materials selected by the Billy Ireland’s 2018 CXC special guests, and view our current exhibitions, ARTISTICALLY MAD: SEVEN DECADES OF SATIRE and KOYAMA AND FRIENDS: PUBLISHING, PATRONAGE, AND THE NEW ALTERNATIVE PRESS

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum would also like to extend a special welcome to our special guests, LYNN JOHNSTON, DARRIN BELL, and ANNIE KOYAMA!

Library book sale a major success!

On Thursday, August 30th we held our very first Billy Ireland Cartoon Library duplicate* book sale! We are thrilled to report that this initiative was a major success. We raised $5,201 through the sales, which will go directly toward funding the cataloging of our collections.

From interleaving paper to archival storage boxes to staff salaries, processing each new collection requires a significant financial investment. We receive additions to our library every day, whether it’s an envelope of material, or a semi-truck full! Making our collections as accessible as possible to scholars, fans and the public while preserving them at the highest standard is our mission, and the support of our patrons goes a long way. We employ nearly a dozen Ohio State students each year, and work with practicum students from library science programs across the country. We are proud to be training a new generation of librarians, and the book sale proceeds will directly support this effort!

Thank you to all who attended. Plans are underway to hold an additional small book sale during the Friday of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus 2018, September 28th from 11:30am – 2:30pm in our lobby. We hope to make these sales a part of our regular annual programming!

*All books sold in our sales are duplicates (often even triplicates) of items already held by our permanent collection.
