To welcome new visitors and patrons, we summarize here some resources to explain to the uninitiated about the Hilandar Research Library (HRL) and the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS).

6th International Hilandar Conference, July 19-21, 2013

The 6th International Hilandar Conference, “Medieval Slavic Text and Image in the Cultures of Orthodoxy,” begins Friday, July 19th, with an opening reception and keynote lecture at the Blackwell Inn on the campus of The Ohio State University at 6pm. Beginning at 6:15pm, welcoming remarks will be made by David C. Manderscheid, Executive Dean and Vice-Provost of the College of Arts and Sciences, Lisa R. Carter, Associate Director for Special Collections and Area Studies of the OSU Libraries, and Predrag Matejic, Curator of the Hilandar Research Library (HRL) and Director of the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS).

Mirjana Živojinović, the President of the Hilandar Committee and a distinguished member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, will present the keynote address, “My Hilandar,” about her life’s work on the history and documents of the Serbian Orthodox Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos.

20 papers will be presented at the 6th International Hilandar Conference in six panels on Saturday, July 20th (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) and July 21 (9:00 am to 12:00 pm) in Thompson Library, Room 165. The panel topics include “Hilandar Monastery,” “Image – Visual Theology,” “Focal Points of Culture,” “Medieval Textual Tradition,” “Liturgical Tradition,” and “Reinterpreting the Textual Tradition.” The presentations will be 20 minutes in length with time for questions at the end of each session.

In conjunction with this summer’s major events sponsored by the RCMSS and the HRL, i.e., the Medieval Slavic Summer Institute and the 6th International Hilandar Conference, the exhibit in the Thompson Library Gallery is “Travelers to and from Mount Athos: The Translation of Culture, Knowledge, and Spirituality.” Summer hours of the Gallery in Thompson Library, 1st floor, are Mondays-Fridays, 10am to 4pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm.

New RCMSS website is now live

The Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS) has a new website http://rcmss.osu.edu/. RCMSS is part of the College of Arts and Sciences (ASC) of The Ohio State University, and the ASC recently overhauled and updated all of its websites so that they conform to Ohio State’s new branding policies regarding standardization of colors, fonts, etc. And while the RCMSS is still affiliated with the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS), its website is no longer hosted by CMRS – the address of the old RCMSS website was www.cmrs.osu.edu/rcmss.

Our sincere gratitude to Jody Croley Jones, Web Communications Specialist for the College of Arts and Sciences, and her colleagues for transferring the contents of the old website to the new, while implementing the new design policies and standards.

The film of the “History” of the RCMSS and the Hilandar Research Library (HRL), “Preserving and Accessing the Past: The History of the Hilandar Research Library and the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio,” is still available on this new website. It has been digitized, and there are currently three versions available: English, Serbian, and Spanish. Tapescripts of the three languages are also available on the website. There are still plans to translate the script and record it in additional languages. The videos reside on youtube.com, and have already surfaced on several other third-party websites.

There is a tab for “Newsletters,” where the current issue – v. 34 (June 2013) – of Cyrillic Manuscript Heritage is prominently displayed as it is available in the third-party online newsletter management website issuu.com. In the right navigation pane of that webpage is a link to the “Newsletter Archive” that leads to pdfs of the back issues 1 (June 1997) to 33 (December 2012).

The “Image Gallery” contains the images from the 5th International Hilandar Conference (Raška, Serbia, September 2002), which were on the old RCMSS website.

“Resources” include links to other websites at Ohio State and beyond that might be useful to visitors to the RCMSS website.

“Contacts” lists the personnel associated with RCMSS/HRL and provides a form for visitors to send in questions and comments.

The mailing address, phone, fax, and email address are visible at the bottom of each page on the website.

If there is something else you would like to see on the RCMSS website, please let us know and we will take your suggestions under consideration.

7th Biennial Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI)

MSSI 2013 Orientation

The Seventh Biennial Medieval Slavic Summer Institute (MSSI) opened on Monday, June 24, 2013, with 11 of the 12 participants in attendance. The orientation was held in the Conference Room (105C) of the Jack and Jan Creighton Special Collections Reading Room of the Thompson Library.

Predrag Matejic, Director of the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS), welcomed the participants and led the introductions; Rebecca Jewett, Assistant Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts and the Reading Room Manager, reviewed the procedures for conducting research, paging books, etc. Helene Senecal, RCMSS Coordinator, addressed the logistics of the housing and university benefits for the non-OSU students; Lyubomira Parpulova Gribble, HRL Assistant Curator, shared her research interests with the group; RCMSS GA Lauren Ressue introduced the participants to the OSU learning management system “Carmen”; and Daniel E. Collins of the OSU Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures said a few words about the “Readings in Church Slavonic” course that he teaches during the MSSI.

The participants viewed the online video, Preserving and Accessing the Past: The History of the Hilandar Research Library and the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies, and then toured Thompson Library, where they wound up at a gallery talk about the current exhibit, Travelers to and from Mount Athos: The Translation of Culture, Knowledge, and Spirituality.

Luncheon was held at the OSU Faculty Club, followed by the first session of the MSSI from 2pm to 4pm, where Daniel Collins led the class through a reading of a prayer of St. John Chrysostom in manuscript BAN.13.7.5.

We are saddened to learn of the death of Hrizostom, Bishop of Žiča, Serbia, on Monday, December 17, 2012.

At the time of the Hilandar Research Project photographic expeditions to Mount Athos in the early 1970s, Bishop Hrizostom was the librarian of Hilandar Monastery.

Bishop Hrizostom (Stolić) was born in Ruma, Yugoslavia, in 1939. From Visoki Dečani Monastery (Kosovo), where he had become a monk, he went to Jordanville, New York, where he graduated from St. Sergius Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary. Afterwards he spent 19 years in Hilandar Monastery. He became Bishop for Western America in 1988, serving in that capacity until 1992, when he was elected Bishop of Banat. In 2003, he became Bishop of Žiča. He is the author of several interesting books on Orthodoxy, Svetačnik ili Pravoslavni mesecoslov, Služba Sv. Savi Trećem, and the editor of Liturgija Sv. Apostola Jakova, Liturgija Apostola Marka and Liturgija Apostolskih ustanova (Joković 2007: 47, n31).

Predrag Matejic Receives Award from Sofia University

On September 19, 2012, Predrag Matejic was presented with the blue ribbon, the highest award that the University of Sofia “Kliment Ohridski” can bestow on one of its graduates, for his outstanding contribution to the study of Bulgarian culture.

The event was announced on the Sofia University website. The announcement is summarized below in English.

On 24 September 2012 at 11am in the Conference Hall of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Department of Cyrillo-Methodian Studies, Predrag Matejic, Curator of the Hilandar Research Library and Director of the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA, will lead a roundtable discussion. Professor Matejic will discuss the history of these two institutions and their future plans and projects, as well as the history of the longstanding relationship between Bulgarian scholars and this library and center. In the Hilandar Research Library are preserved a large number of microfilms of exceptionally valuable Slavic manuscripts, the originals of which are still kept in Hilandar Monastery [on Mount Athos] and in many other repositories around the world. The microfilms are used by many Bulgarian and foreign scholars and, as a result of such research, significant discoveries have been made in the field of Bulgarian and in Slavic and Balkan culture. The center aids scholars in their search for sources and literature.

Professor Matejic has a master’s degree from Yale University and a doctorate from Ohio State in the field of Slavic literatures and languages. His contribution to the study of the history of Bulgarian literature is invaluable. In 1978 he received his doctorate of philological sciences from Sofia University. In his dissertation he analyzed the literary works of a hitherto fore unknown medieval Bulgarian writer from the 14th century, which he discovered in a manuscript. The dissertation was published as a book in Bulgaria under the title “the Bulgarian hymnographer Efrem from the 14th cent.”

Found in the Archives: Newsletter of the Hilandar Project

Among the archives of the Hilandar Research Library and the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies are copies of a newsletter that was published sporadically from 1979-1986. The inaugural issue of the “Newsletter of the Hilandar Project at The Ohio State University” was edited by Charles E. Gribble, now professor emeritus of the OSU Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures. Issue number 1 appeared in January 1979 with the following stated purpose:

“This is the first issue of a new publication designed to keep both scholars and the general public informed of the work going on in the Hilandar Project at The Ohio State University…. We will try to provide a running bibliography of publications, both books and articles, which treat materials contained in the Hilandar Collection, or which touch on related topics.”

The issue includes a description of the formal dedication of the Hilandar Room in the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library on December 2, 1978, and reproduces the remarks made on that occasion by Father Mitrofan of Hilandar Monastery, Riccardo P. Picchio (Yale University), Richard Pope (York University, Toronto), and Dr. Predrag Matejic. The speech that Father Mitrofan gave at the banquet that evening is also included in this issue.

Issues No. 2 (Oct. 1979) and No. 3 (Aug. 1980) were also edited by Charles E. Gribble.
