Lothar Meggendorfer, 1847-1925
Lothar Meggendorfer was born in Munich, Germany. During his career he illustrated over 100 books, including “mechanical toy books,” or pop-up books. An illustrator and watercolorist, he drew for the German humor magazines Fliegende Blätter and Münchener Bilderbogen. He published the Meggendorfer Blätter, which featured the work of several important German artists as well as his own. He contributed work to the Chicago Tribune in 1906. Though the Tribune published only a few of his works, they show his exceptional command of line, composition, and color.
