(Image: Stadium construction begins, c1921-1922) Foundations were laid in autumn 1921; construction of the steel superstructure began in the January 1922. To pour concrete around the structure’s steel wires, contractors used four cranes to deliver concrete to a system of chutes. In the spring, the University was forced to make a general appeal to the community to subdue its curiosity about the new Stadium; students and locals were known to crawl around the site, displacing the steel reinforcing cables laid in the Stadium’s green concrete. By the summer of 1922, one concrete arch, of 78 total, was being poured every day.
