Survey – Simon Birkhoff
What was your role on campus at the time:
Child of a research professor
During the school year 1969-70, where did you live:
Off-campus
Were you a member of any student organization on campus? If so, which one(s)?
none
What were your impressions of campus during the time period?
My father was a research professor in lighting engineering during this time. He came home with tear gas burns; he talked about organizing with other faculty to make a buffer between soldiers and students.
Did you think the university should be closed? Why or why not?
No, the presence of National Guard soldiers heightened tension. [The] governor’s reaction was poorly informed.
What did you do during the two weeks the university was closed?
Campus was eerie. This is my most vivid memory. We attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on campus, and my father made a point of driving through campus, through a National Guard checkpoint to get to church.
