Campus Maps
1898
Ohio Field makes its appearance on the campus map in 1898, clearing a section of the woods for immensely popular track and field events. Neil Run, dried by the installation of a city trunk sewer, amounts to little more than a graded gully. The 1890s saw the campus’ first named halls, in Orton and Hayes, the installation of a central heating system, and the first incandescent lights. Plans for landscaped paths connecting the new buildings – the beginnings of the Oval – were prepared by a Cincinnati firm in 1893.
