While specific research methods and practices vary across disciplines, there are also expectations and assumptions around research and scholarship that are broadly shared among scholars. Students who are completing research or inquiry-based assignments may be unfamiliar with the shared understandings related to the purpose and process of research, while they are at the same time trying to make sense of the specific requirements and procedures for researching in their discipline. In this workshop, part of University Libraries’ Information Literacy Virtual Workshop Series, we consider how the hidden knowledge that experienced researchers and instructors have may contribute to the challenges that students experience when completing research or inquiry-based assignments and discuss strategies for bringing this knowledge to the surface.
