Description
  • One page out of 65 rough sketches for "Sugamo Life Sketchbook." Sketches depict many areas of daily life at Sugamo. Six images have Japanese handwritten captions or text; all others with text have English handwritten in the images or typed and mounted as captions below. Many images are unsigned; about half are signed "Fumio" in Japanese in the lower left corner; four are signed F. Fujiki: three in the lower right corner and one in the lower left. Each cartoon is mounted to lined paper in a previously bound notebook. Notebook paper is very delicate with significant staining and discoloration; small tears at the edges throughout. Images are in very good condition, with some dirt or discoloration. Cover is watercolor and ink original art, mounted to front board and previously included in binding. Verso of cover has a brief description handwritten in Japanese identifying the images as rough sketches of early Sugamo manga sent to the U.S. Department of State by request.
