  • This essential navigation tool was custom designed for Admiral Byrd's 1928 expedition to Antarctica by Albert H. Bumstead, a National Geographic Society cartographer. This compass relied on the sun to give accurate direction. Admiral Byrd expressed his gratitude for this important piece of technology by naming a mountain in the Antarctic after his friend Albert Bumstead.
