- Text on cartoon: What a state you have reached. wretched Victim of Whiskey! See the forms that assail – ferocious and frisky: On all sides they squirm, ‘till with terror you rave, The end soon is coming, a drunkard’s vile grave.
- Written in pencil at lower right: "James this is what will become of you if you don't stop your drinking."
- When jimjams entered English in the mid-19th century, it probably referred to a specific kind of jitters, the "delirium tremens," a violent delirium caused by excessive drinking.
