  • Lithograph, maybe drawn by John L. Magee for his monthly, "The Old Soldier." Depicts Daniel Webster stealing the "Fugitive Slave Act" from Henry Clay. Webster, a northerner, supported the "Fugitive Slave Act" in his famous "Seventh of March" speech. Although Clay had pushed tirelessly for the bill Webster's memorable speech contributed greatly to the bills passage, with this cartoonist even suggesting that Webster stole credit for the bill. Other pictured figures include Lewis Cass, a senator from Michigan, and Henry Stuart Foote, a senator from Mississippi. In the piece Cass is seen to say of Foote "Good Heavens! aint tha man done yet," as Foote, another prominent supporter of the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act, drones on while the Senate sleeps. The Defendant in this case (one, Webster: a very Intelectual looking man & it is said posessed of competence, which made the case appear more singular.) was charged by the complainent (one Clay) with having purloined from his "Clays" pocket while he "Clay" was enjoying a long "Nap." (The Senator from Mississippi not having finished his speech) an important Paper, which the aforesaid Clay had been at much pains to procure for his own exclusive benefit, The Defendant "Webster" maintained a dogged Silence on the subject, of the Theft but talked loudly about his "Constitutional rights" as an American Citizen. the strangest part of it was that on leaving the "Court-room" the Defendant "Webster" was loudly applauded while the Complainant Clay was scarcely noticed.
