  • Civil War patriotic envelopes feature symbolic imagery of the causes motivating the war. They acted as artistic promotions of patriotic sentiments. These envelopes were non-government printing, created by print shops and sold starting in the spring of 1861. The envelopes were an element of popular culture during the Civil War and, like these unmailed covers, were collected and saved as souvenirs.
  • From the Civil War Patriotic Envelopes collection that includes thirty-seven envelopes featuring caricatures of famous political figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. The envelopes are of a pro-Union stance of the Civil War era.
