Originally in the possession of Capt. L.R. Booth of the Red Cross, these photographs focus on the plight of the refugees in the aftermath of World War I. They were taken by Lewis Hine, a photographer best known for his photographs of American children in the workplace as well as adult laborers, interests that are evident in these photographs taken in Eastern Europe. He was a member of the Red Cross delegation that traveled through Europe documenting conditions, and his photographs were employed by the Red Cross in their fund-raising efforts.
