The Company of Biologists Read and Publish Agreement

The Ohio State University Libraries and The Company of Biologists have entered into a Read and Publish agreement.

Under this three-year agreement, Ohio State will have unlimited access to current and archive journal content and the Open Access costs of research articles published by Ohio State corresponding authors in all of The Company of Biologists' journals will be covered.

Beginning January 1, 2023 and continuing through December 31, 2025, Ohio State corresponding authors have uncapped and fee-free Open Access publishing benefits for research articles accepted in Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology, Disease Models & Mechanisms, and Biology Open.

I’m a corresponding author at Ohio State. What do I need to do to publish Open Access at no cost to me under this agreement?

  • Submit your manuscript to any of The Company of Biologists' journals using your institutional email address.
  • The affiliation of the corresponding author is used to determine eligibility. When providing your contact details, please include your Ohio State institutional email address, as well as your affiliation with The Ohio State University.
  • If you are submitting an article to Development, Journal of Cell Science or Journal of Experimental Biology, please follow the on-screen instructions and be sure to select "Gold Open Access" and "Read & Publish fee waiver". (Please note: This step is not required for Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open.)
  • Once the article has been accepted, complete and return the Publication Agreement via the publisher's author workflow system.
  • The publisher will send you a link to their RightsLink system and an automatic fee-waiver will be applied. University Libraries will receive a copy of the transaction link and will action the funding request. You will receive a confirmation email as soon as University Libraries confirms your eligibility.
  • If your article is eligible, APCs are covered by University Libraries and your article will be published Open Access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license at no cost to you.

What is a Read and Publish Agreement?

A Read and Publish deal is an agreement in which the publisher receives payment for reading, the subscription access to the content, and payment for publishing, the article processing charges (APCs), bundled into a single contract. The individual author publishing charges are funded by the contractual arrangement for those authors publishing Open Access.

What is covered by the University Libraries The Company of Biologists Read and Publish Agreement?

The Read and Publish agreement combines traditional subscription-based access to articles published in The Company of Biologists hybrid journals for the Ohio State community with immediate Open Access to Ohio State-authored articles in both hybrid and Open Access journals. The three-year agreement gives Ohio State unlimited Read access to all hybrid subscription journals, with perpetual access to content dating back to 1853, as well as covering the Open Access fees for articles published by Ohio State corresponding authors in all of The Company of Biologists' journals. Ohio State corresponding authors will be able to publish their research articles Open Access immediately upon publication without paying article processing charges (APCs).

What journals are included in the publishing agreement?

The Open Access publishing benefit of the agreement includes all of The Company of Biologists' hybrid and pure Open Access journals: Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology, Disease Models & Mechanisms, and Biology Open.

When will Ohio State authors be able to publish Open Access with The Company of Biologists and have the APCs covered by this agreement?

Access to the publishing benefits for Ohio State corresponding authors begins January 1, 2023 and continues through December 31, 2025.

This means that to publish an article as Open Access without paying any Article Publication Charge (APC), the article must be accepted for publication during this period.

Who is eligible to participate in funding for Open Access Article Processing Charges (APCs)?

Corresponding authors affiliated with Ohio State upon acceptance of their article are eligible to participate. When submitting, an Ohio State email address should be used, and The Ohio State University affiliation should be stated.

Are all publication types included in the Publish agreement?

Research articles are covered by this Open Access publishing agreement.

The research article types covered by this agreement are: Research Article, Research Report, Techniques and Resources Article, Techniques and Resources Report, Short Report, Tools and Resources, Methods & Techniques, Short Communication, and Resource Article.

Are there any costs for authors to participate in Open Access publishing?

The article processing charges (APCs) for publishing Open Access under the new agreement are covered in full for currently affiliated Ohio State corresponding authors. If the journal has additional costs, such as page charges or color charges, these fees will still apply and will not be covered by the agreement.

How long will Open Access publishing charges be covered by this agreement?

The new agreement with The Company of Biologists is a three-year agreement beginning January 1, 2023 and ending December 31, 2025.

How are articles published for Ohio State authors choosing to publish Open Access under this agreement?

An Open Access publishing agreement will be used for authors to retain their copyright and publish with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license.
