TOME Eligibility and Guidelines (Archive)

Eligibility

We invite Expressions of Interest from current Ohio State tenure-track faculty in the humanities or humanistic social sciencesWe encourage authors to submit an Expression of Interest following peer review of their manuscript. Note: Expressions of Interests are currently closed.

Subvention Funding

Up to $15,000 per successful application, to be provided to the publisher. University Libraries will award up to three $15,000 grants per year for the next five years to support the publication of an Open Access, digital scholarly monograph. Only costs incurred in the production of the publication are eligible for subvention funding. A budget review will be conducted as part of the application process. Subventions support publishing costs. They are not sales and cannot be distributed as royalty payments to authors.

Publication Criteria

Publications must be long-form peer reviewed scholarship (monographs up to 90,000 words in length) in the humanities or humanistic social sciences published by a participating press. The high-quality, accessible, and platform-agnostic Open Access digital edition of the monograph must be made freely available online upon publication under a Creative Commons license, preferably CC BY. Monographs with embargoes, or delayed Open Access, are not eligible. We expect publishers to add a funding acknowledgment to the digital editions and provide the authors and/or University Libraries usage metrics upon request. We prefer that authors are given the option to retain copyright of their monographs. We expect that potential buyers of print editions are made aware an Open Access digital edition is available.

Selection Criteria and Review Process

The University Libraries TOME@Ohio State Steering Group will consult with authors upon receipt of an Expression of Interest. If the project is ready for funding, an invitation to apply for funding will be extended. The TOME@Ohio State Selection Advisory Committee will review all applications and make funding recommendations to the Steering Group. In evaluating applications, the Committee and Steering Group will consider the robustness of peer review and evidence that the press is able to publish the work meeting the Initiative’s criteria. The Committee and Steering Group will also work to ensure that the funds allocated through this Initiative support a diverse range of faculty, including rank. If recommended for funding, the Steering Group will work with the author and the author’s Press to determine appropriate funding and terms for subvention as part of the Initiative. Mode and mechanism of Open Access publication as well as author's rights and publication license will be arranged.
