Known for his temper and unpredictable behavior on the field, Hayes spent much of his time off the field working tirelessly for a number of charities. He spent countless hours visiting patients at Children’s Hospital in Columbus and was also a frequent guest speaker at fund-raising events, using his fame and connections to bring in money to support a wide variety of large and small causes. During the Vietnam War, he made four trips overseas to visit with and entertain deployed servicemen and women.

Instead of keeping the honoraria from his numerous speaking engagements, Hayes used the money to establish the Woody Hayes Cancer Fund. His work was recognized by the OSU College of Medicine with this sculpture of Hippocrates. Inion reads: "Presented to Coach Woody Hayes in recognition of his many contributions including establishment of the Woody Hayes Cancer Fund,” November 21, 1986
