Known for his temper and unpredictable behavior on the field, Hayes spent much of his time off the field working tirelessly for a number of charities. He spent countless hours visiting patients at Children’s Hospital in Columbus and was also a frequent guest speaker at fund-raising events, using his fame and connections to bring in money to support a wide variety of large and small causes. During the Vietnam War, he made four trips overseas to visit with and entertain deployed servicemen and women.

Here, Hayes is pictured with Col. David E. Ott, an expert on field artillery tactics in Vietnam. Hayes in Vietnam, 1967
