In the early 1890s, Emerson McMillin, a New York financier, agreed to pay $10,000 for the construction of an observatory near the lake. He agreed to pay $5,000 more if the area were beautified. Until then, plans had called for Mirror Lake to be paved over for a road going from Neil Avenue to east campus.
