SUMMARY:Safety Last! - Silent Film at the Wex
DESCRIPTION:Cosponsored by the Wexner Center for the Arts and University Libraries. \nLike other creative works\, many films from 1923 have entered the public domain this year. Classic releases from the heyday of silent films starred legends such as Charlie Chaplin\, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Safety Last! was highly successful and critically acclaimed when it was released in 1923\, and is still considered one of the most significant comedies in film history. It starred Lloyd and secured his career as a featured star. \nJoin us for a showing of Safety Last! at the Wexner Center for the Arts on Wednesday\, November 6 at 7pm\, featuring a soundtrack composed by Carl Davis in 1989. Davis has created scores for nearly 60 silent films\, and his orchestration for Safety Last! is based on the line-up of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra of the 1920s\, and inspired by the popular music of that era. \nAnother Harold Lloyd film\, Dr. Jack (1922)\, is the subject of a commonly provided ‘cue list’ of music in a periodical of that time. This “Photoplaying” feature from a 1923 issue of the American Organist journal is just one of the countless writings and resources published for practical use of film theatre musicians in the 1910s and 20s. Active organists\, conductors\, arrangers and publishers authored guidance on matters of style\, musical-dramatic moods and effects\, and detailed suggestions for scene-by-scene live music selection\, as seen in the list provided in the public domain article linked above. \nThe Ohio State University Libraries’ Silent Film Sheet Music Collection includes hundreds of such musical works arranged for the typical film theatre orchestras of the early 20th century\, with parts for each instrument. Here are three examples published in 1923 that have entered the public domain this year and are freely available on this project’s Scores & Audio page: \n\nClark\, C. Frederick: Midnight (Novelty Fox Trot)\nCoots\, J. Fred and Dave Ringle (arr. Ted Eastwood): Home Town Blues\nSavino\, Domenico: Misterioso alla Valse (Dramatic Suspense)

SUMMARY:OSU Symphonic Band concert featuring 'McKinley's Own' march by Karl King
DESCRIPTION:Among the nearly three hundred band compositions by Ohioan Karl L. King (1891-1971) is the march McKinley’s Own. The title refers to Canton’s Grand Army of the Republic Band\, which King served as conductor in 1919. Published in 1923 by Fillmore in Cincinnati\, the march was dedicated by King to his predecessor Emil Rinkendorf and the band\, which had performed at gubernatorial and presidential campaign appearances by Canton native William McKinley in the 1890s. The OSU Symphonic Band\, conducted by Professor Scott A. Jones\, will mark the centennial of King’s directorship of the Grand Army Band by performing this rarely heard work\, using Alan Green’s new edition based on the original 1923 parts. \nThis performance is offered as part of the Public Domain Project at OSU. More information on the project and upcoming events is available at go.osu.edu/PublicDomainDay. \nImages (unknown photographers): 1919 Grand Army of the Republic Band of Canton; Karl King is seen with a moustache in the back row slightly left of center (Top). SUMMARY:Public Domain Chamber Music and Chat
DESCRIPTION:Two of composer Paul Hindemith’s milestone chamber works were first published in 1923: the Cello Sonata op. 25 no. 3\, and the String Quartet op. 22. Mark Rudoff\, OSU Professor of Cello and Chamber Music\, has a special interest in these works\, and will celebrate their public domain status by performing them as soloist and as a member of the Janus quartet. Remarks on the significant public domain developments in 2019 and the music itself will be presented\, with opportunities for questions and discussion. \nThis concert marks the launch of a new Columbus string quartet that takes its name and inspiration from Janus\, the Roman god of time and transitions\, presenting faces that look to the past and the future.  Janus brings together rising stars Devin Copfer and Leah Anderson with veterans Nancy Nehring and Mark Rudoff.  They share the artistic mission of tugging on threads that connect old and new music\, and weaving those threads into the broad tapestry of the humanities. \nThis event is offered as part of the Public Domain Project at OSU. More information on the project and upcoming events is available at go.osu.edu/PublicDomainDay. \nImages: \nJanus: Devin Copfer and Leah Anderson\, violins; Nancy Nehring\, viola; Mark Rudoff\, cello (photo by Ziwei Jin) \nPaul Hindemith in 1923 (photographer unknown) \n  \n
