The original building, finished in December of 1913, and its three additions (completed in 1926, 1929 and 1950) were built for the Ohio Historical Society, which had received permission to build a museum on campus.

The building is an example of Neoclassical architecture, marked by its Ionic colonnades along the north, east and south sides, as well as its cornice.

The title to Sullivant Hall was transferred to Ohio State on October 30, 1970, and it was officially named “Joseph Sullivant Hall” on December 4, 1970. The building then underwent renovations from 1973 to 1975.

Joseph Sullivant was a surveyor and renowned botanist, a member of the Ohio Board of Education, and a member of the Board of Trustees (1870-1878). The Joseph Sullivant Medal is also named in his honor.
