Stillman Hall
Stillman Hall opened in September 1937, its eclectic mix of styles a characteristic of projects built through the federal Works Progress Administration. Also notable is the motto carved onto the front of the building: “Justice, Freedom, Democracy, Knowledge, Experience, Happiness,” a motto that could easily embody both the College of Social Work (housed in the building) and the WPA. Another interesting aspect of the building is the series of murals on the fourth floor, which were painted by Emerson Burkhart.
The building was officially named on January 14, 1952, to honor Charles C. Stillman, a distinguished professor of social administration and director of the School of Social Work. An addition was finished in 2000.
