Officially named “St. John Arena” on September 7, 1954, the structure was completed November 1, 1956.

The first game played in the 13,897-seat arena was between the Buckeyes and Butler University’s Bulldogs. OSU won, 98-82.

Lynn W. St. John, or “Saint,” was university athletic director from 1913 until his retirement in 1947. “Saint” played a key role in the construction of Ohio Stadium and other athletic facilities, including the arena that was still on the drafting table at the time of his death. He also was a renowned coach (of baseball, basketball and football), and it was during his time here that the athletic program began to gain recognition.
