The building was officially named by the Board of Trustees on September 14, 1965 in memory of Alice Rebecca Raney.

The building opened for service as a co-ed dining hall and study facility in January 1967. Though no longer a dining hall, the building plays host to campus events.

Rebecca Raney was the first Ohio State woman casualty of World War II. She became ill while serving in the Army Nurse Corps in England in 1944, and passed away shortly thereafter. Raney graduated from Ohio State in 1939 and went on to work in public health before enlisting.
