The Math Tower was part of a three-building construction project, along with the Science and Engineering Library and a classroom building at 209 W. 18th Avenue. The total construction cost was $25.5 million. After the Brown Hall Annex was demolished in 1991, the tower was built on its site.

The tower, library and classroom building are the only buildings in central Ohio to be designed by architect Philip Johnson, famous for the AT&T Building in New York City and the Crystal Cathedral in California.

Since its completion in 1993, the Math Tower has served as office space for faculty and graduate students in the Department of Mathematics.
