Mack Hall was built as an all-women’s dorm, with the original structure completed in 1923. The original structure is the portion nearest Oxley Hall, which at that time also housed only women.

Two additions to Mack Hall have been built: the first was constructed at the corner of Neil and 11th avenues – it was finished in 1935 – and the second addition was built along 11th Ave, and was finished in 1940.

John Mack was a Sandusky native and graduate of Oberlin College. He was well-known at the time as the publisher and editor of the Sandusky Register, and as a founder of the Ohio Associated Dailies, as well as its president for 25 years. Mack served on the Board of Trustees continuously from 1893 until his death on July 9, 1914—a total of 21 years, never missing a meeting until his last illness. He was known for his business sense, as well as his vision for the University role in the state higher education system.
