The James R. Hopkins Fine Arts Center was officially named April 10, 1960. The original portion of the building, facing 17th Avenue, was completed in 1959. An addition to the west side, facing the Oval, was finished in November 1962.

Though Hopkins Hall was meant to replace Hayes Hall, Hayes Hall remains in use to this day.

Hopkins, who arrived at OSU in 1923 as a visiting artist in residence, chaired the Department of Fine Arts for nearly a quarter of a century (1924-1947). An internationally acclaimed painter, Hopkins did portraits of Presidents Edward Orton and William Oxley Thompson, Engineering Professor Edward Orton Jr. and George F. Arps, Dean of the College of Education.
