Officially named by the Board of Trustees on April 6, 1962, in memory of James W. Haverfield, this residence hall and other North Dorms were built in honor of OSU’s war veterans.

Construction began on Haverfield House in the spring of 1962 and was mostly completed September 12, 1963, just in time for Autumn Quarter. Originally, Haverfield House was an all-men’s dorm.

A native of Uhrichsville, Ohio, Haverfield graduated from Ohio State in 1930. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and active in Scarlet Mask. He enlisted in the Navy in November 1940. He was reported missing in action in 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and he was declared dead just five months after he was called to active duty. A Navy destroyer escort vessel was named to honor him.

Haverfield House is one of nine dormitories built on North Campus during the 1960s to honor University graduates and former students who were killed during war service.
