The construction on the original portion of the building (facing the Oval) was begun in October 1922 and completed in June 1924. Originally called the Commerce Building, it was renamed in 1943 to honor Dr. James Edward Hagerty.

During his OSU career, Dr. Hagerty served as the first Dean of the College of Commerce and Journalism, the first chair of the Department of Sociology and the first director of the School of Social Administration. Dr. Hagerty was also the first to teach a marketing course in any university in the United States.

An addition to the back of the structure was completed prior to its dedication on June 3, 1950, and in 2005 the building underwent extensive renovations, including the addition of a 250-seat auditorium, a café and a World Media Center. Hagerty Hall now houses many of the language departments at OSU.
