The building is named for Harry R. Drackett, who graduated from Ohio State in 1907 with a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering.

While at OSU he was the President of the Pan-Hellenic Association, a member of the cross country team (’06, ’07), business manager of The Lantern (’06, ’07), a member of Sigma Chi, and a founding member of Sphinx senior honorary.

His service to the university didn’t end with his graduation, though. As an alumnus, he remained involved, helping to organize the Development Fund and serving as chairman of its board of directors from its creation in 1938 until 1945. He also served as chairman for the Alumni Advisory Board for 10 years, and was also on the board for the University’s Research Foundation.

He eventually became greatly involved in several civic associations in Cincinnati, while he was president of Drackett Chemical Company. In 1943, the university presented him with an honorary degree for his service. He passed away in 1948.

The Board of Trustees named Drackett Tower on September 7, 1962. Construction began in 1963, and the dorm opened March 28, 1965. Originally an all-men’s dorm, the tower cost a reported $3,006,833.28.
