Completed in 1906, Derby Hall was named on August 8, 1929, to honor Samuel Carroll Derby.

Derby was a professor of Latin at OSU for 40 years (1881-1921). He also served as University Librarian for 11 years during this period, for no extra pay, as well as serving as the first Dean of the former Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.

Derby Hall has housed the Chemistry, English and Liberal Arts departments and is the current home of the Political Science and Geography departments. Derby Hall has been expanded four times; the original structure is the portion facing the Oval, with later additions expanding the building towards 17th Avenue. This was the third chemistry building, after its predecessors fell victim to fire. It, too, sustained fire damage six months after its completion, resulting in the first addition: a fire-proof storage room.
