Officially named by the Board of Trustees on April 6, 1962, in memory of John F. Archer, this residence hall and other North Dorms were built in honor of OSU’s war veterans.

Construction of the building began in early 1965 and was cleared for occupancy on July 21, 1966. The cost was reported as $806, 278.02. The building opened as a men’s dorm, but by 1968 was being converted over to office space.

Archer House was converted back to a dorm beginning in 2005 and reopened for Autumn Quarter of 2006.

As an undergraduate, Archer was a communications major, a member of the Romophos honorary society and Student Senate; he graduated in 1945. He had been awarded the Bronze Star and five other stars during World War II. He was the first Ohio State alumnus to die in action in the Korean War.

Archer House is one of nine dormitories built on North Campus during the 1960s to honor University graduates and former students who were killed during war service.
