McCracken Power Plant
The original Power Plant was completed in September 1918. It was later enlarged four times (1923, 1929, 1959, 1962).
The structure was named to honor William C. McCracken in 1960, a year after his death at age 96. McCracken had been hired in 1886 as engineer and chief janitor for a campus that included four buildings and two dorms at the time. His 52-year service as chief engineer and superintendent of buildings and grounds included the introduction of electricity to campus. After he retired in 1939, he returned part-time for another eight years. Later, he wrote an extensive history of the University’s physical plant.
