Please join us for GIS Day 2019 on Wednesday, November 13 in the Research Commons. This year’s program will feature a new Map Expo event! We invite any OSU-affiliated students, faculty, and staff to display their work to showcase the variety of mapping and GIS projects happening across Ohio State. Additional details about submitting an entry to be included in the Map Expo are provided below. If you have any questions about participating in the Map Expo, please contact Katie Phillips at

Submitting an Entry

To submit an entry, please complete the brief form here: GIS Day Map Expo Submission Form.

The last day to submit an entry is Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

Note: Participants can submit multiple entries for display during the Map Expo, though a separate form should be completed for each. Student participants submitting multiple entries must indicate which of their maps they would like to be considered for one of the Map Expo awards (see below) on the appropriate form. Only one entry per student participant can be considered for an award.

One first place scholarship ($500) and one “people’s choice” scholarship ($250) will be awarded, thanks to a generous contribution from the Department of Geography.

Note: Only currently enrolled students (both undergraduate and graduate) are eligible to receive the scholarship awards. Faculty and staff are encouraged to present their work at the Map Expo but are not eligible for award consideration. The same participant cannot win both the first place scholarship (as chosen by our judges) and the “people’s choice” scholarship.

Map Expo entries can include reference maps (i.e., those that display the location of geographic features) and analytical maps (i.e., those that communicate data that is not inherently geographic and/or exhibit problem solving, analyzing data, or showing a trend). Your map can be based on a research project, class assignment, or original concept. We encourage originality and creativity, but please remember to keep it appropriate. Your Map Expo submission should feature your own cartographic work. The use of third party data or applications is permitted with appropriate citation.

Both physical and digital maps will be accepted as Map Expo submissions.

  • Physical submissions: All sizes are encouraged. However, due to space limitations, the maximum space allotted per entry is 36″ H x 48″ W. Poster printing is available in Room 160 at Thompson Library and various other campus locations (see here for more information).
  • Digital submissions: All interactive mapping platforms are encouraged, such as ArcGIS Online maps, Story Maps, or any other digital map. Participants submitting digital maps should plan to bring their own laptop, tablet, or appropriate mobile device to display their map, as we are able to provide table space for these submissions but will not have extra devices on hand for display.

Evaluation Criteria

Map Expo submissions eligible for award consideration will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Concept and originality: This criterion considers how innovative the map is. How much of the work is borrowed from the work of others? Are there many maps just like it?
  • Cartographic design: This criterion considers artistic merit, cartographic presentation, clarity of communication, and how well the map works for its intended audience.

GIS Day 2019 is a collaboration of the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA), Department of Geography, OSU’s Enterprise GIS, and the University Libraries. Thanks to the organizers of the Ohio GIS Conference Map Gallery, whose submission guidelines we borrowed from significantly in putting together this event.
