Fall 2016 Meeting: Gender representation in scholarly publishing

November 4, 2016
Guest: Dr. Jevin West (University of Washington)
Co-sponsored by University Libraries and Ohio State ADVANCEPhoto of Dr. West

Dr. West is an Assistant Professor at the Information School at the University of Washington and co-director of the DataLab. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Washington and continued with a postdoc at the Department of Physics at Umea University in Sweden where he worked on the mapequation.org project in the Icelab. Jevin co-founded Eigenfactor.org with Carl Bergstrom – a research project that maps large scale citation networks in order to better understand, navigate, and evaluate the scientific literature.

Public Lecture - Diversity and Gender in Scholarly Publishing: 10-11:00 AM, Research Commons Colloquia Space
Dr. Jevin West will be delivering a public lecture in the Research Commons (3rd floor, 18th Avenue Library) on Friday, November 4th. Dr. West will be delving into the hidden and surprising ways that inequalities in gender are still present in the realm of scholarly publishing. Dr. West will highlight his findings and the implications of his results for understanding diversity in academia, within publishing practices and beyond. Furthermore, Dr. West will offer a brief explanation of how this data was obtained and interpreted, and discuss the ways in which other researchers can explore this rich data set to uncover other trends in scholarly publishing.

Editors' Group Meeting: 1-2:00 PM, Research Commons Brainstorming Room (3rd floor, 18th Avenue Library)
Dr. West will join the Editors' Group for a discussion about the unique opportunities and challenges that editors face related to diversity and gender. This meeting is meant to support editors in their work and to allow them to contribute to dialogue on an emerging area of study and practice in journal publishing.
