Ann Hamilton's latest project

when an object reaches for your hand

Thompson Library

September 21, 2019 – April 28, 2020

The Thompson Library bookstacks provide a dramatic and unusual setting for artist and Ohio State professor Ann Hamilton’s latest project, when an object reaches for your hand. The book-form stacks, displayed on tables in front of the windows of Thompson’s second floor, are the culmination of a yearlong collaboration between the Wexner Center for the Arts and The Ohio State University Libraries.

Hamilton, graduate students and studio assistants worked with Ohio State special collections staff to scan objects rarely seen by the public. These images, together with scans of objects from personal collections, are printed on the book-forms on view in Thompson and in the Wexner Center’s exhibition Here. In the spirit of the university’s mission to make its archive available, visitors may take a print from the stacks, either for themselves or to mail to an address of their choice at the mailing station beside The Thompson Library Gallery.

After the close of the Wexner exhibition, Hamilton’s Wexner project will migrate to the library to fill the windows on the upper levels of the visible bookstacks.
