When the new ADA regulations were announced in 2024 to make web and mobile app content more accessible, The Ohio State University Libraries faced a significant challenge. More than 110,000 PDFs and three times as many digital images did not meet the technical accessibility standards, resulting in an unequal experience for users who rely on screen readers and alt text. Addressing this using existing processes would have been time consuming and costly.
Instead, a team at University Libraries partnered with Arizona State University’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cloud Innovation Center, powered by Amazon Web Services, to develop an AI-powered process that helps visually impaired college students fully access and engage in their coursework and campus activities. Not only does this work improve the student experience, but it also advances Ohio State’s broader AI strategy and commitment to equitable access in higher education.
The university’s efforts have drawn national attention. Inside Higher Ed recently featured Cory Tressler, assistant dean for technology and digital programs at University Libraries, highlighting how his team found a way to remediate non-accessible files within minutes instead of hours using this AI-powered process.
