Metadata Initiatives student employee Zhiren Xu was recently selected as a recipient of a 2021 University Libraries Student Employee Scholarship. According to his colleagues, Xu is an exceptional student employee and takes pride in his work, making him a valuable asset to the University Libraries team. We interviewed Xu to learn a bit more about him and his time with University Libraries.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi! My name’s Zhiren Xu. I’m a senior majoring in computer and information science. I’ve been working with University Libraries for two years. Enjoying delicious foods, hiking, biking and swimming are my favorite things to do. I’m also a dog person, and I definitely missed the therapy dog sessions in Thompson Library this year!
What initially drew you to working with University Libraries as a student employee?
At first, I just wanted to try something new. The metadata work in the job description sounded interesting. Plus, I’ve gotten lots of help from University Libraries and thought that I should join in and help others in return.
What is something you’ve learned by working for University Libraries?
I’ve learned more about teamwork, how to clearly express my thoughts and how to discuss issues with others. I’ve also learned to never hesitate in asking for help, as well as to be dedicated, patient and to not give up easily.
How will this scholarship impact your time as a student at Ohio State?
The scholarship will, of course, help me with paying my tuition, allowing me to take fewer loans in the fall. However, for me, the scholarship is more than just financial support. It is proof that University Libraries recognizes and appreciates my work, and I am deeply grateful for this kind of recognition. It gives me confidence and excitement for my future studies and career.
What would you say to other students who are considering working for University Libraries?
University Libraries has a friendly working environment and colleagues are super helpful. Join the team and you won’t be disappointed!
