Student employees at The Ohio State University Libraries make an impact on the lives of those who walk through the doors of or utilize the services of our libraries. Jinju Kim, a student employee with the University Libraries security team experienced that first hand which she reflected on in her scholarship application.

During a shift at the 18th Ave. Library, Jinju was approached by a student who was seeking shelter from an aggressive person they interacted with on their way to a campus gym. After listening to the student explain the situation, Jinju worked to console the student, asked if they sustained any injuries and quickly took account of the situation and the description of the aggressor. Fortunately, the student was physically unharmed. After notifying her supervisor of what was happening, he walked over to check on the student.

“A key lesson that I learned from this experience was the importance of effective communication and patience. This allows the student or any other patron to feel supported and understood. The incident also heightened my awareness of my responsibility as a student security to not only patrol the libraries and help with the lost and found, but to be prepared for unexpected situations and ensure safety protocols are followed thoroughly,” Jinju said.
