Maria Scheid has been appointed head of Copyright Services effective June 1.

Reporting to the head of the Scholarly Sharing program area, Scheid’s new role will include the operational and strategic leadership of Copyright Services. She will lead the development and implementation of copyright policies and strategies to enable broader access, use and preservation of University Libraries’ collections. Scheid will support campus students, faculty and staff in navigating copyright matters in the creation, use, dissemination and open sharing of scholarly work. She will develop and promote educational guidelines and programs around rights, permissions and fair use as they pertain to teaching, research and publication, and she will lead instructional activities relating to best practices in the management of author’s rights and appropriate reuse of copyrighted content.

Scheid received her Juris Doctor degree from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2013. Her career with University Libraries began with a term position in March 2015 funded by the Office of Distance Education and eLearning and based in the Copyright Resources Center. In February 2016, she was hired as University Libraries’ rights management specialist and was promoted to copyright services coordinator in July 2018. Scheid has served as interim head of Copyright Services since April 2020 and was the recipient of the 2022 Dean’s Award for Staff Excellence. She has served on numerous University Libraries committees and project teams, including the Affordable Learning Working Group, the Data Services Forum, Staff Advisory Council and more, and represents University Libraries in the international University Information Policy Officers group.

We congratulate Maria on her new role and look forward to watching her continued success.
