The Innovative Digitization of a Japanese Cultural Treasure

Kept in a beautiful wooden box at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, a pair of 1920s Japanese manga scrolls at Ohio State offer innumerable opportunities for researchers interested in manga, Japanese studies and more. However, the special care needed to handle the delicate paper and their non-circulating status makes it difficult for many to physically interact with the scrolls. Wanting to provide easy access to their content to a broader audience, Japanese studies librarian Ann Marie Davis collaborated with University Libraries' Preservation & Digitization team to repair and digitize the scrolls, making them available to users worldwide

Watch the video below to discover the innovative processes used to preserve and digitize these cultural treasures.
