Celebrate Día de los Muertos

Save the dates for Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead celebration. The multi-day program will include activities on November 2 and November 4.

Thursday, Nov. 2, 2-3:30 p.m., 11th floor Thompson Library, 1858 Neil Ave.,  featuring:

 

  • A Perspectives’ lecture on the Day of the Dead origins by Dr. Ignacio Corona. This year’s speaker will reference holdings in the Rare Books & Manuscripts Library
  • A pop-exhibit of José Guadalupe Broadsides from the Latin American Broadside and Manuscript collection
  • Day of the Dead altar dedicated to the victims of hurricane Maria and Mexico’s recent earthquake
  • Calavera poetry activity led by the audience
  • Special visit by Ms. Ana Marina Albarenga a Deputy of the Legislative Assembly from El Salvador.
  • Enjoy traditional Mexican pastries along with other snacks, coffee and hot chocolate. Come for any part of the program!

Saturday, Nov. 4. 11 a.m. -5 p.m., multiple locations, featuring:

  • Free tacos, face painting and a movie screening at the Gateway Film Center from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Participate in a procession led by Azteca dancers and Brazilian capoeira. The procession portion of our program will be audio recorded for the American Religious Sound Project overseen by Dr. Isaac Weiner in Comparative Studies.
  • Day of the Dead altars created by graduated students presented at the Ohio Union
  • Reception at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum celebrating the opening of the “Looking Backwards, Looking Forward: U.S. Immigration in Cartoons and Comics” exhibit curated by Jenny Robb and Dr. Jared Gardner. Exhibit tour led by Dr. Jared Gardner at 4:30 p.m. Family activities throughout the building and light refreshments.
