The Archives at The Ohio State University has announced the 2024-2025 recipient of the $6,000 Archives Research Award. Emily Murphy, Senior Lecturer in Children’s Literature at Newcastle University (UK) is the winner of the award. Dr. Murphy was selected from a pool of five applicants.

Dr. Murphy will visit the Archives to conduct her research in the spring of 2025. As she stated in her application, Dr. Murphy will use the Admiral Richard E. Byrd collection to advance her research for her second monograph, The Anarchy of Children’s Archives: Global Citizenship and Empire in the American Century. Dr. Murphy writes in her application, “The fact that the Polar Archives hold a voluminous amount of children’s letters makes it an ideal place to carry out this work.”

"One of the reasons we chose Dr. Murphy is because her research is unique, yet it builds off the work of a previous award winner,” said University Archivist Tamar Chute. “We are excited to have her use the Byrd collection to further her research goals."

The Archives Research Award was established in 2022 and is given annually. It is available to graduate students, faculty and independent scholars who demonstrate a need to utilize the collections onsite. To learn more about the award and how to apply, visit https://library.osu.edu/archives/research-award.
