Hilandar Monastery Greek Manuscript Collection

During the 1975 photographic expedition to Mount Athos, Predrag Matejic was able to photograph approximately 112 Greek manuscripts and scrolls that were housed in Hilandar Monastery's library. At that time, there were an additional 107 manuscripts, mainly Psaltiki and fragments, which he did not photograph because of the time constraint and the lack of a sufficient number of rolls of film.

Descriptions of the 112 items are not available in the OSU Libraries' online catalog at this time. Please contact the Hilandar Research Library if you are interested in any specific manuscripts, hilandar@osu.edu.

Spyridon Lambros describes 26 Greek manuscripts and then provides a general description of the remaining Psaltiki in the section on Hilandar Monastery in the 1895 volume (vol. 1) of his description of Greek manuscripts on Mount Athos. He lists a total of 226 manuscripts.

Euthymios Litsas has described 136 of the Greek manuscripts in Hilandar Monastery in two issues (2007 and 2008) of the journal Tekmērion: Epistēmonikē epetērida tou Tmēmatos Archeionomias-Vivliothēkonomias (Kekyra). Litsas assigned new shelf marks to the manuscripts, but he does provide a table showing the correspondences between his shelf marks to those of Lambros and the Monastery in his 2008 article.
