INTRODUCTION

THOMAS LOWE TAYLOR, 1938-2009, was a poet, photographer, and publisher whose unique and innovative work was highly regarded among his fellow poets and artists. This collection is a continuation of The Thomas L. Taylor Papers, Spec.rare.cms.97, where a more detailed introduction to his work may be found. This collection consists principally of photographs taken by Taylor. See below for a more detailed account of the organization and nature of the photographs. Further materials may be added in the future, as this guide is a work in progress.

Overview of the Collection:

Repository:Rare Books and Manuscripts Library
Identification:Spec.rare.cms.176
Creator:Thomas L. Taylor
Title:Thomas L. Taylor Papers 2001-
Dates:2001-
Quantity:29 manuscript boxes
Description:A collection of Taylor's photographs.

The lack of chronological order between folders is in dialogue with Thomas L. Taylor’s (TLT) style artistically, and the way in which he stored and sent the items. Also, many photographs were undated and unmarked and chronology could not be determined in many instances. Instead the photographs are arranged by theme and common subject matter within each folder, and date whenever it was possible, to create a unified and cohesive set of photographs and information for any viewer of the contents. The black and white photographs were taken earlier on in TLT’s career, and the colored photographs were the subjects of his later work. Many themes become apparent throughout these photographs including close to 1000 different representations of the white mask created for Jan Richardson and came to symbolize the beloved in TLT’s photographs, images of America and its symbology, and TLT’s many landscapes both of nature (many taken at his home on the Pacific coast) and manmade environments. As well, there are photographs of his family and friends, including other poets and artists, and his dog. An artist in many ways, the collection includes several copies of TLT’s different publications of his poetry and prose work. TLT’s use of double exposure to produce an effect in the photographs which he then refers to as doubles.
