Guide Compiled by Jeffrey Rudzinski and John M. Bennett

INTRODUCTION

JOHN PERLMAN, 1946-

The poet John Perlman was born in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1946. He received his BA from The Ohio State University, and a MA in Education from Iona College, in New Rochelle, New York. He briefly taught creative writing at Ohio State University, and then for many years taught English at Mamaroneck High School, New York. As a poet, he was sometimes loosely associated with some of the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets, but created a voice very much his own, combining a true lyricism with innovative linguistic techniques. He edited and published some literary magazines, among them Roof and Shuttle. Room Press was an imprint under which he published several works by others. He published extensively in journals and little magazines, and in numerous books and chapbooks. Among the latter are Exuviae (1993), Kachina (1971), Legion Their Numbers (2003), The Natural History of Trees (several editions; the latest 2003), Self Portrait (1976), Swath (1978), and A Wake Of (1982).

This collection includes drafts, worksheets, and manuscripts of his poetry, his publications, and an extensive collection of correspondence from a wide range of his contemporaries: poets, editors, and writers, with many of Perlman’s originals and replies in carbon copies, photocopies, or computer printouts. The correspondence deals with literary and personal matters, publications, Perlman’s poetry, and other subjects.
