 Historical Note

The Ohio State University Men’s Swimming Team dates back to 1939 when four students broke the Amateur Athletic Union’s record for the 800 yards breaststroke relay. In 1952, Buckeye swimmer Ford Konno participated in the Helsinki Summer Olympics and won gold for the United States in the Men’s 1500 meter freestyle. Sports Illustrated dedicated articles in their February 1955, March 1956, April 1956, August 1956, and December 1956 issues to the team. The team also won National Swimming and National Team Champions awards in the 1950s. As of 2017, the team had won 29 collegiate championships.

One of the most memorable coaches from the Ohio State University Men’s Swimming Team is former coach Mike Peppe. Peppe was the first Ohio State University swimming coach, entering the position in 1931. He was an Olympic swimming coach in 1948 and 1952, coaching 24 Olympic swimmers. He retired in 1963.

 Scope and Contents

The Ohio State University Men's Swimming Collection contains materials gathered on or by the men’s swimming and diving teams at Ohio State University from 1928-2019. The majority of the collection is comprised of a range of audiovisual materials and artifacts. Most of the audiovisual materials are 16mm films, but also include 35mm and 8mm films, VHS and other types of videocassettes, Super 8 film, and a videodisc. The footage depicts swimming and diving competitions, practices, Olympic trials, and some women’s swimming events. Artifacts in the collection include a variety of trophies, plaques, clothing, and other memorabilia. Many of the artifacts and films are related to Mike Peppe and the era in which he coached the swimming and diving teams (1931-1963) at Ohio State University. The collection also contains correspondence, contracts, and other administrative files related to swim equipment, transportation, and locations of competitions. Certificates from events honoring the team and individual players, scrapbooks, photographs, artwork, media guides, programs, and other publications are also part of the collection.
